Infusing Computers into Cells: “Playing God”?


            
Now that we have successfully put a name to what our ancestors called ‘magic’, the world, with all its knowledge and expertise, is expanding in the blink of an eye under the cover of ‘science’. The question is, does our ability to pursue humanity’s never-ending quest to unveil the mysteries of the world already overstepping our bounds as ‘creations,” not “creators”? Religious conservatives have put it succinctly in the phrase: “playing God”. But is humankind truly playing god?

The phrase "playing God" is not a theological term; rather, it derives from secular culture and functions as a warning, an accusation if you will, to people, particularly scholars, who “substitute” themselves for God through the idolization of science resulting in moral injunctions against their pursuit of total and unrestrained control over nature. But the truth is, the term has been used to describe even a mundane activity as “doing anything or making any decision that places anyone else's life in your hands, or making judgments about someone that can [a]ffect them”. However, I do believe that it’s all a matter of perspective, and scientists are no closer in finding the secret ingredients to Creation than in measuring the distance between heaven and earth.

 

A blunt assessment of the Holy Bible describes the one true God as loving, patient, and omniscient; thus, I believe that He would never want to stand in the way of the advancement of His people. The revelation of natural wonders, by scientists no less, has never signified that humans are on the threshold of acquiring God-like powers, especially in matters of life and death. In fact, couldn’t it be argued that the process is only feasible with the utilization of the gift of intelligence from God? Aren’t we His workers, disciples, if you may, planted here on earth to make the world a better place? Human abilities are merely mirrors of God’s power; our own strength can never equal His for ours is limited in nature, not because we are not like God but because He is not one of us.

 

When the media talks about the risks of scientists playing God, with genetic engineering and creating hybrids and other strange life forms in the laboratory, we tend to think about so-called Frankenstein foods and the risk posed by our interfering with the natural order. However, while Western critics fuss about the morality of stem-cell research and genetic engineering, Asian religions champion biotechnology as “[t]herapeutic cloning in particular [that] jibes well with the Buddhist and Hindu ideas of reincarnation.”

In 2010, genome-mapping pioneer J. Craig Venter has successfully created artificial life in a laboratory for the first time, sparking debate about his “playing god” and the potential dangers of his invention. Professor Julian Savulescu, an expert in Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford, said: “Venter is creaking open the most profound door in humanity’s history, potentially peeking into its destiny. He is going toward the role of a god: creating artificial life that could never have existed naturally.”

For many of us, this is not a problem. But some will see the discovery as usurping the proper role of God, or taking an arrogant and hubristic attitude to life. “They are not just tinkering with life, they are designing and creating it.”

 

However, Dr. Venter only dismissed these allegations, saying: ''That's [playing god] a term that comes up every time there is a new medical or scientific breakthrough associated with biology. It's been a goal of humanity from the earlier stages to try and control nature…that's how we got domesticated animals.”

Like Prometheus, scientists are said to be overstepping finite limits; out of pride or hubris they are risking a backlash from nature.  But our era is limited only by our imagination. Anything is possible but not everything can be deemed as truly the work of a god, not even by a human-god. To breathe life into a bacterium using genes assembled in the laboratory is not similar to giving life to a human being out of thin air. Scientists may try to prove themselves capable of ‘playing god’ but there is more to creating life than meets the eye. The key is to approach science with a grain of caution and with an eye open for an infinite number of possibilities. To appreciate science is to appreciate the One who created it.

Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad GMO?


The subject of genetically-modified organisms (GMO) receives so little publicity in the sphere of public debate. This very reason is to blame for the “massive and uncontrolled unleashing of GMOs into our diets and our environment”. However, the general public is in desperate need of enlightenment about a topic as crucial to one’s survival as food.

Since 2002, the arrival of GMOs such as the Bt corn and the Bt eggplant in the Philippine market has stirred contention among environment groups and independent scientists against the flawed GMO approval system in the country, which as of 2001, has approved a “total of 67 GMOs for importation, consumption, and/or propagation”, even for varieties banned in other countries.

In 1974, Henry Kissinger stated, “He who controls the food, controls the people” and nowhere is this more apparent than in the realm of GMOs and the multinational monopolies that control them. George Siemon, CEO of Organic Valley, the United States’ largest organic farming cooperative put it succinctly in an article from ABC news: “There is a growing awareness that our [food supply] system makes us all guinea pigs of sorts.” The fact that most of us don’t know these sad realities—or worse, don’t even know that we have the right to lay our questions down—is a damning indication of how the GMO debate is being stifled and concealed from public eyes.  The side of GMO multinationals and promoters would rather kill the debate than leave themselves vulnerable to controversies they themselves cannot fully account for. In other words, the less people know about GMOs, the less the opposition. With no other choice but defense, this side brands the opposition as “anti-technology”, “primitive”, even “inefficient”, in an attempt to deflect attention from the fact that there is truth to the grave scientific uncertainties on the safety of GMOs.
Without even a pretense to solid scrutiny, it is no wonder if there is truly a dark hidden agenda to manipulate science, public governance and public perception for the benefit of profit-maximizing goals rather than public good. However, time will expose those who have been in the pursuit of truth after all. But in the meantime, media should be at the forefront of this expose, leaving no stone unturned. The public has the right to be distrustful and they have every right to, because the GMOs are no laughing matter.

Community Immersion in Pook Libis, U.P. Diliman Campus

 We marched into perhaps one of the most remote areas inside the U.P. Diliman campus only to find ourselves amazed that there can be a little piece of the province found even in a busy and dingy area of Metro Manila. But the nostalgia was short-lived. It was replaced by the moment we saw for ourselves the squalid living conditions of the families in Pook Libis. To be honest, I have seen worse in my little town of Cainta but the pity and sadness for the teenagers had overridden any amount of relief I felt at the sight of cemented (albeit narrow) streets and

Our group handler, Allen Metrio warned us about this. He reminded us time and again to brace ourselves for a sordid accounting of the an actual workers' plight but in the company of our two interviewees, none came. Ate Periwinkle, my "buddy" for the assignment and I surveyed the streets whilst carefully assessing every nook and cranny of every house, every street, looking for someone who can give us his time. He came in the form of a shirtless man wandering the streets

Maralitang lungsod ay binubuo ng mga manggagawa, magsasaka, at mala-manggagawa na nalakubog sa kumunong ng kahirapan na masahol ang kalagayan bilang inaapi. Kabilang sa nabanggit na estado sa lipunan, ang mga taong nasa hanay ng peti-burgesya   at lumpen proletariado tulad ng mga sex workers, magnanakaw, at manggagancho na nabubuhay sa pamamagitan ng mga anti-social na pamamaraan. Isang hamon ang ilipon at mag-organisa ngunit hindi ito ang kasalukuyang prayoridad ng . 


Mga mala-manggagawa ay mga tindera, tsuper, kargador, mga dating manggagawa na nawalan ng trabaho at kasakukuyang naghahanap ng trabaho ay hindi na tinatawag na manggagawa dahil isa sa katangian ng mga manggagawa ay kolektibong pagganap ng isang aksyon/tungkulin mula sa hilaw na materyales patungong isang ganap na produkto Halimbawa, ang higit-kumulang na 2000 na mga empleyado ng isang pabrika ay may kanya-kanyang kontribusyon sa pagbuo ng isang produkto samantalang ang isang drayber ay siya lamang gumagawa para sa kanyang sarili sa pagbibigay ng isang serbisyo. Kaya iba ang kategorya o termino sa pagiging manggagawa na nakatali sa produksyon at ang isang manggagawa na nilisan ang pabrika para makipagsapalaran sa kanyang sariling mga paa na hindi responsable sa iba para sa pagbibigay ng serbisyo. 2008, higit sa tatlong milyon sa buong Pilipinas nakatala na mahirap/maralita, mahalaga ang datos na ito, matapos ang WW11 nagsulputan na ang maralita sa kalunsuran na halos taon-taon 20 milyon ang nadadagdag at tumindi nang tumindi pagpasok ng 2000. 2008, 31 milyon na mahigit at ang pinakamahihirap ay matatagpuan sa kalakhang Maynila Bukod sa kawalan ng trabaho, bukod pa sa bunga ng pandaigdigang krisis sa  dahil sa kasalukuyan dikta ng IMF at World Bank at WTO na binuong organisasyon ng mga imperyalista. Yung buong krisis ipinapasan sa lahat sa sambayanan ng daigdig partikular na sa mga manggagawa. Sa Pilipinas,  dati ng pinapanatali ang kalagayan at buong sistema ng lipunan na kolonyal at mala-pyudal. Sa hagupit sa manggagawa at hambalos nito sa kalagayan ng manggagawa, ang mga kasong nakasampa sa NCR, karamihan ang mga nanalo ay mga indibidwal na kaso ng mangggawa, mga tinanggal o illegal dismissal pero halos lahat ng manggagawa na may union at may kaso at nagsasampa sa Department of Labor o saan mang sangay ng DOLE lalo na sa NLRC ay talo particular sa usapin ng unfair labor practice, collective bargaining negotiation na deadlock, union rights, ay talo. Bakit? Dahil sa kontrolado ng gobyerno at kapitalista lalo na ng mga dayuhang multinasyonal na korporasyon. Sila kasi yung nagdidikta na dapat dawin na decision at resolution ng dole, kung hindi lalayasan sila ng mga kapitalista, hindi na magbibigay ng mga incentives sa gobyerno, mga panglagay sa bulsa. Nasa mga kamay pa rin tayo ng mga dayuhan. ang tanging magdidikta lamang ay ang mga kapitalista at hindi ito kayang labanan ng estado, ng gobyerno dahil hindi nila kaya sapagkat kapg gumawa sila ng hindi poborable sa mga mga mata ng dayuhan ay lalayas ang mga ito at sa ibang bansa magiinvest kung saan  mura rin ang lakas paggawa o sahod. Sa katotohan, sa Pilipinas matatagpuan ang pinakamurang sahod kahit pa sabihing ng gobyerno na mas mura sa China kung saan totoong mas mababa ang sahod ngunit ang serbisyong panlipunan ay naipprovide ng gobyerno, dito sa atin, walang kakayahan ang gobyerno na sustentuhan ang bawat isa sa mga pangangailangan ng kanyang mamamayan. Sa usapin ng magsasaka natin, maliit lamang na bahagi ang mga kaso sa kung bakit abnormal ang kalagayan ng sistema. 75 ng ating populasyon ay magsasaka, lumiliit ang lupang pansaka dahil inaagaw ng mga monopolyo/ korporasyon ang mga lupain dito sa Pilipinas upang transporma o idevelop at inconvert sa mga golf courses, subdivisions. Ang mga maliit na magsasaka ay nagtitiis sa mga lupang kaya pa nilang angkinin, sakahin. Ang gobyerno ay kasalukuyang walang proyekto para paunlarin ang lipunang nagsasaka. Ang maralitang lungsod ay karamihang mayroong mga politiko mula mayor hanggang presidente na ginagamit ang mga community bilang "mass base" kaya kahit ang mga politiko ay hindi magawang todotodong palayasin kaya naghahanap sila ng paraan kung papaano lehitimong mapapalayas na nakikita pa ang gobyerno kaya ito mga komunidad ay salat sa kaalaman kung paano gamiting ang kanilang mga karapatan para ipagtanggol ang kanilang lupang paninirikan at mag may-ari ng lupa. Ang gobyerno, lahat ng politiko ay nagbibigay ng pondo, para saan? Ang nakakalungkot ay para lang magkaroon ng court, gym, feeding programs, club/association (youth, women's) na hindi tamang/sapat na solusyon. Ang mga komunidad ay nakikita ang mga politiko bilang pera. Ang suliranin ng ating lipunan sa ilalim ng abnormalidad na kalagayang mala-kolonyal at mala-pyudal ay pinapanatili ng mga panginoong may lupa

A Bloody Battle Royale

SUCAT ROAD, PARANAQUE —One of the busiest thoroughfares in Manila turned into a battle zone Monday, April 23, as residents of Silverio Compound, armed with huge blocks of rocks, molotov cocktails and other projectiles, fought policemen and members of the SWAT to save their "talipapa" from court ordered demolition.

The showdown that lasted an hour turned ugly when Arnel Leonor, 21, dropped dead with a gunshot wound in the head, while 39 other people were injured. 

             With 25,000 families in danger of losing the very home where they fed, nursed, and raised their children to life, it is heartbreaking that no one, not even Paranaque City Mayor Bernabe, held themselves accountable to the consequences of destroying the peoples' lives right in front of their eyes.  But the policemen deployed to "secure" the situation did nothing of the sort. Instead, they were pawns in a game between municipal government and the Compound residents. The latter is, (and I think) will always be on the verge of a CHECKMATE dealt by the upper hand of the corrupt local officials if money is a constant in the equation. 


              Now tell me, who gave the SWAT team permission to unleash a torrent of, what the media reported as, "warning shots" to the residents who can only retaliate  with rocks and plastic bags filled with human waste or vinegar and chili peppers? Helpless citizens can do nothing but scamper and cower in the comfort of their homes (not for long, sadly) fearing for their lives and their livelihood. If Silverio Compound is exactly what Mayor Bernabe claims as a goverment-property, then shouldn't the building be for the sole utilization and welfare of the Paranaque City residents? Besides, isn't the government by the people and FOR the people, regardless of the latter's class stratification as "urban poor"?
